Corrections facility saves over $40,000 a year by cleaning chillers with ScaleBreak®
Facility Maintenance

The Problem: A corrections facility in the Northeast was experiencing high approach temperatures with their two 900-ton Trane chillers. These units run 24/7 for five months of the year providing comfort cooling for staff and occupants. The condenser barrels had heavy scaling, which resulted in both chillers operating at a 10˚ approach. Normal, or efficient condenser approach temperatures range between 0-3˚, and a 10˚ approach would correlate to about 1/16” of scale on
the tubes.
The Solution: After consulting with Goodway Experts, the HVAC Foreman for the facility purchased a GDS-100 pump system and (4) 55-gallon drums of ScaleBreak®️. The circulation time for the cleaning was five hours.
The Results: Once the cleaning was complete, and the chiller came back online, the approach temperatures dropped to 1/2˚. Based on that energy savings (KW/HR), they achieved a total cost savings of approximately $42,500 a year.
