Reducing Commercial Building Energy Costs: Five Energy-Saving Tips with Immediate Results

Manhattan Skyscrapers photo (energy saving tips )Area Development magazine, the distinguished 40-year-old publication that describes itself as “the leading executive magazine covering corporate site selection and relocation,” published a useful article in late summer 2009 by David Leathers, Senior Vice President in the Building Service & Energy Solutions division of Limbach Facility Services LLC.  Titled “In Focus: Five Immediate Ways to Reduce Commercial Building Energy Costs” (Aug/Sept. 2009), it offers exactly what the title indicates: a list of five energy-saving tips with accompanying explanations.

Boiled down, these tips are as follows:

  1. Retrocommission!
  2. Work with trained technicians and engineers to eliminate energy loss from poorly maintained steam traps.
  3. Optimize your HVAC system via proper maintenance, proper operations schedules, equipment replacement with newer and more efficient models, etc.
  4. Replace, upgrade, and/or reprogram to optimum use patterns your building’s energy management system and temperature controls.
  5. Do a thorough building audit to determine where newer and more advanced equipment and systems might help (e.g., upgrades to lighting systems, changes to the building envelope, and so on).

Our advice:  Click through.  Read.  Contemplate.  Take action accordingly.
